Writing Desk

Writing is a solitary job.

I need a quiet place and a computer.  This is the time when I throw words into the computer beginning with a rough outline of the story. A goal is to Write at least a 1000 words or more a day. When I get to about 20,000 words for a novel, then I begin rewriting, revising and adding new. When I finish the first rough draft will have aprox 100,000 words.   An internet connection is a requirement, not to write but to do research. Google earth helps with georgraphy, distance, and climate. Visting countries web site is useful to learn about the people and culture. There is no substitute for visiting, working and living in countries out of the US. It's been my privelige to to have traveled the world and lived with peope in the Far East, South America, and Europe.

How do I get the ideas for a book or story? Observation of the place and the people that are around me wherever I happen to be. In Greece I'm not distracted by the conversation because I dont understand the language. I can and do interrupt when the discussion is animated. At home I'll make a few notes that will refresh my memory. When I writing a book or story I remember the action and the disccussion with revisions to fit the situation in my story. I also obearve the features, look and gestures of those participating in the disccussion. Are they excited, angry, bored, or talking over someone, to a person on the side.
